Overseas Basketball Salaries – The Money

Most people are surprised when they hear that you don’t make $40,000 a season. Overseas basketball salaries can range anywhere from making no money, but getting a free place to live and some free meals, all the way up to $5 million a season or more.  It all depends on what level you playing at, what country you are playing at, and the situation of the club you are playing for.  You have to understand that basketball is not very popular in many European countries and most countries outside of the U.S. For example the highest paid player in Germany makes around $700,000 a season and the highest paid soccer player makes 4 million a season.

I know this is a pretty vague answer to your question.  I’m telling you that overseas basketball salaries range from $0 to $5 million, so let me try and explain this in more depth.

Having a good basketball agent for overseas is really important.  Not only to help you find the job, but to get you the amount of money you deserve, but if you play in a low level you have to understand that these teams have a set budget and no matter how much your agent begs they just can’t pay more.  Germany is pretty notorious for underpaying players in the low leagues.  In the top league you will get paid well if you deserve it, but in the low leagues these teams do not have big time sponsors (soccer steals them all) and these clubs understand they can get Americans for cheap so they do.  When I say cheap I am talking around $1000 a month.  In the 2nd league you can make more and a decent amount, but you still are not going to make $40,000 a season or even $30,000.

If you are playing in any of the overseas basketball leagues in Italy or Spain you can expect to get paid more.  Even the low levels there pay decent.  You can make $25,000 a season in a lower league and make great money in the 2nd and 1st league.  I’m talking NBA money in the first leagues, but you better be a legit pro basketball player and NBA prospect if you want to play in those leagues.  I’m talking Ricky Rubio is coming off the bench there.

If you are coming out of college and didn’t play at a big time D1 then expect to get paid around $1,000 a month.  Maybe you’ll get lucky and make more, but this is normal until you prove yourself.  Think of it like being on scholarship.

The next level down would be France and Greece when talking about overseas basketball salaries amounts and then probably Germany and Poland.  After that you have countries like Denmark, Holland, Austria, Czech Republic, etc.  The thing you might not realize is that there are so many damn countries just in Europe, and that’s just Europe.  There is all of Asia and South America.

So if you have game and can play you just gotta follow your dream and make it happen.  If you don’t know where to start you should definitely
